Women's Department

As a follow-up to my Men's Department post, I wanted to post a few thoughts about buying gifts for men at this time of year.  Men, I think, are much easier for women to buy for than the other way around.  Unless you have a metro-sexual mid-century loving husband like mine, who above all, would like me to make our living room look like the photo above, most guys are happy with whatever you find for them.  Of course, buying something you think they "should" like or want or wear does not work.  This is not the time to inflict change on your guy, just find him something he'll enjoy!

If Anne Baxter says it's good it's gotta be good!  Sort of a funny twist in this early 1950's ad with a woman, celebrity that she is, peddling tools!  The guy does look impressed though, afterall, it is a gadget!

Clothing always works for guys.  (Unless you buy him some reindeer sweater or something; do NOT!) Most guys either a) do not like to go clothes shopping and like to have them handed to them, or b) like to go clothes shopping and therefore like clothes and still like them handed to them.  My husband would LOVE any of these shirts or sweaters shown above, even today.  In fact, I have found a few vintage gems I have set aside for him this year...

In my contemporary household, I am actually the tool person, but, my husband still loves gadgets.  Anything that involves music, video or technology in any way is sure to make a guy happy.  And a hammer might just work as well. (I mean wrapped, as above, not knocked over the head. Again, this is the time of year for thoughtfulness and grace...)

This is a NO.  Absolutely do not get this gift for any man, couple, or person you know unless you really really dislike them.  This is just wrong.

  1. I'm pretty sure I could get away with giving those to Kenny if I called them iJail iJamas. And gave him an iPlumb iHammer. Do you get my iDrift? He would be easy to buy for, if he'd just stay out of the Apple store after say, iJuly.

  2. It looks like Anne Baxter has bought that gift for Richard Carlson.

  3. It does look like him but I zoomed in and it is Hugh Marlowe - they were promoting All About Eve which makes sense because the magazine was from 1950 as well...

  5. This makes me think of the time I put together what I thought was an incredibly thoughtful birthday gift for my then boyfriend, consisting of essential kitchen items, a toilet bowl scrubber, and underwear. Didn't go over so well. But, seriously, the man did not own a toilet bowl scrubber and his underwear had holes in them! Plus they were Calvin Klein!
